Frequently Asked Questions

How does the National Digital Twin Programme (NDTP) align with the UK Government’s Missions?

The NDTP aligns with and contributes to several key government missions:

Kickstarting Economic Growth – By ensuring organisations can adopt and adapt shared interoperable digital solutions, the NDTP helps reduce duplication, accelerates innovation, and fosters investment. Its open-source products provide a national-scale foundation for data-driven transformation, supporting wider government efforts to advance digital and AI-driven innovation.

Making Britain a Clean Energy Superpower – The NDTP is a key enabler of efforts to create an interconnected ecosystem of digital twins across the energy sector. By supporting secure, interoperable data-sharing, the NDTP helps optimise grid management, enhance forecasting, and accelerate the UK’s transition to net-zero energy.

Strong Foundations – National Security – The programme is actively supporting defence and national security initiatives by providing trusted, interoperable digital infrastructure for secure information sharing and operational efficiency. Additionally, the NDTP works closely with government security advisers to embed resilience and trust into digital twin adoption, ensuring that data-sharing frameworks align with national security priorities.

Breaking Down Barriers to Opportunity – Through initiatives focused on practical implementation of digital skills in information management, analysis and presentation, the NDTP is helping to equip the next generation with the knowledge and tools needed for a data-driven future. By making reusable tools and frameworks available to schools and institutions, the programme supports the development of a digitally skilled workforce, ensuring that the benefits of digital transformation are widely accessible.

By aligning with these core government missions, the NDTP ensures that digital twins are developed and deployed in a way that delivers tangible, long-term benefits to business, government, and society.

How does the NDTP plan to deliver benefits to business, society, government, and the environment?

The NDTP takes a two-pronged approach to delivering value:

Demonstrators aligned to national priorities and government Missions

  • These projects are designed to showcase real-world applications of digital twins in addressing key challenges, such as climate change, national resilience, and digital transformation.
  • Benefits are tracked using valuation methods and standards aligned with The Green Book to ensure measurable impact.

Establishing the ‘rules of the road’

  • The NDTP is developing standards, frameworks, guidance and tools that ensure digital twins are:
    • Safe and secure
    • Trusted, ethical, and sustainable
    • Interoperable and adaptable
  • These efforts support the effective, scalable, and appropriate use of digital twins across sectors, ensuring maximum long-term benefits.

How can developers access and test NDTP’s technical resources?

Developers interested in exploring the technical resources, open-source tools, and frameworks developed by the NDTP can find everything they need in the For Developers section of our website. This includes:

  • Documentation, APIs, and technical guides to help with implementation
  • Instructions on how to contribute to open-source projects
  • Guidance on setting up and testing NDTP-developed assets

To get started, visit the For Developers section, where you’ll find the latest resources and information on how to engage with the programme.

Does the NDTP purchase products or services directly from suppliers?

The NDTP does not procure products or services directly from suppliers. Instead, we engage with suppliers through established government procurement frameworks to ensure fair, transparent, and competitive access to opportunities.

Currently, we use the Spark Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS) for procurement, which allows us to access innovative digital and data-driven solutions. Suppliers interested in working with the programme are encouraged to:

  • Register on the Spark DPS framework, ensuring they are eligible to be considered for relevant opportunities
  • Monitor procurement notices, as new opportunities may align with their products or services

For more information on how to register and participate in the framework, please visit the Crown Commercial Service website.
